Pros and Cons of Vivo Y22 Smartphone

Written by Aris Wibowo

Entering the third quarter of 2022, vivo introduces a new addition to its product lineup called the vivo Y22. This Android smartphone aims to fulfill the ongoing demand for entry-level devices. Therefore, vivo presents more updated specifications to be able to compete.

Retaining the familiar design of the Y series, the vivo Y22 comes with a clearer screen and a faster processor. vivo recognizes the significance of these features in the affordable smartphone market, which primarily works to tasks such as work-related browsing, social media usage, and gaming.

Moreover, vivo has made noticeable improvements to the rear camera segment. vivo is also rumored to present a night mode feature that is very rarely seen in the entry-level series.

Curious about the phone's noteworthy aspects? Make sure to read until the end!

The Advantages of vivo Y22

1. Futuristic Designs

The overall appearance of vivo Y22 is not much different from the previous Y series. As an entry-level phone, vivo only presents a new rear body design that is quite classy. This impression arises due to the addition of a luxurious, large-sized camera module.

Upon inspection of the rear, this latest Android phone showcases more streamlined design, with a back crafted from glass-like plastic that gives it a reflective quality. However, as it still uses a plastic body, the phone has a slight slippery feel and easily dirty due to fingerprints.

Moreover, vivo offers a design innovation in the form of a flatter or more linear side body. This design element enhances the phone's luxurious and modern appeal, similar to the latest smartphone models. However, it can be a little uncomfortable to hold due to its flat sides.

Shifting focus to the front of the device, it's somewhat disappointing that this smartphone continues to employ a waterdrop camera design for the front camera. This design choice is slightly outdated, as many contemporary entry-level phones have transitioned to the punch hole model.

An additional benefit of this body design is the inclusion of IP54 certification, which grants the smartphone dust and water resistance.

2. Layar HD+ 90 Hz

As vivo Y22 is being prepared to compete in low-priced phones, vivo does not present excessive specifications in this screen sector. vivo chose to use a 6.5-inch display which strikes a perfect balance between size and usability, allowing users to interact with their device freely.

Indeed, this generously sized screen will enhance the visual experience, making video watching, web browsing, and gaming much more immersive. The screen resolution, at HD+ 720 x 1600 pixels, is quite satisfactory for an entry-level smartphone.

If you're an avid gamer or video consumer, you'll certainly appreciate the inclusion of a 90 Hz refresh rate, which ensures smoother on-screen animation movements.

The brightness of the vivo screen reaches up to 530 nits, rendering it suitable for use both during the day and at night.

Another remarkable feature of this screen is its eye protection, or "Eye Protection". This attribute helps guard your eyes against harmful blue light emissions from the screen. Moreover, it aids in reducing eye fatigue, even after prolonged periods of screen viewing.

3. Complete Security Sensors

The security system on cell phones continues to develop over the years. If previously, the security system was only in the form of passwords and patterns, now the security system is more accurate and advanced, such as using a fingerprint sensor.

In the case of the vivo Y22, the manufacturers have incorporated a fingerprint sensor that is said to be faster and more precise than those in earlier Y series models. Vivo has thoughtfully positioned this sensor on the side of the device, integrating it with the power button.

Such placement undoubtedly contributes to a neater rear body design. Moreover, this strategic placement makes unlocking the phone feel more intuitive. The power button, in the Y22 series, is ideally situated at the location where the fingers naturally hold the phone.

Should the fingerprint sensor not offer you enough assurance, you have the option to supplement your phone's security with the Face Access feature. This feature enables unlocking the phone using face recognition technology.

4. 2 GB Additional Virtual RAM

Acknowledging the increasing demand for sufficient RAM, vivo steps up their game by offering a boost in RAM for this series to 4 GB and 6 GB, a notable upgrade from the 3 GB of RAM in the vivo Y20.

Moreover, vivo introduces the Extended RAM feature. This functionality allows you to have an additional 1 GB or 2 GB of virtual RAM from the internal memory. As a result, the total RAM for this device can reach 5 GB or 8 GB, providing faster performance

The changes continue to the device's internals, where the phone is powered by a MediaTek Helio G85 chipset. This is a lower-end chipset, designed with a focus on gaming and built using 12nm fabrication.

This chipset has eight cores consisting of two Cortex A75 cores at 2.0 GHz and six Cortex A55 cores at 1.8 GHz as a power saver.

The gaming performance is quite impressive, as it features a 1 GHz Mali G52 GPU and HyperEngine technology.

5. 50 MP Camera

Realizing that entry-level phones often have an average camera sector, vivo presents a more updated camera sector in this Y22 series.

This time vivo relies on a 50 MP f/1.8 main camera and a 2 MP f/2.4 macro camera. In addition to the increased resolution, vivo also presents a new sensor that is claimed to be able to produce more detailed images and videos both day and night.

Due to this new sensor, the vivo Y22 is equipped with the Super Night Mode feature. This functionality enables the camera to capture clearer images under low-light conditions. This feature stands out as it's not commonly found in other entry-level smartphones.

As for the front camera, vivo incorporates an 8 MP f/2.0 camera that is capable of producing quite clear photos, even in dimly lit environments.

6. Fast Charging 18W

Not much different from the previous vivo Y series, this phone comes with a 5000 mAh capacity battery with 18W fast charging. This size is commonly used for today's cellphone standards in various classes. This battery capacity is good enough to support various activities from daily browsing to playing games.

Interestingly, vivo states on its official website that this phone can facilitate up to 20 hours of YouTube viewing or 6 hours of PUBG gaming. This indicates that the power management system is quite good, considering the screen is quite wide with HD+ resolution.

vivo claims this battery can be used longer, thanks to AI Power Saving and vivo Energy Guardian features. This feature makes battery usage more efficient. Additionally, vivo has introduced a reverse charging feature, enabling this phone to charge other devices.

7. Larger Internal Memory

VIVO Y22 STORAGE_

Vivo attempts to address a common issue with entry-level phones, which typically come with limited storage capacity. The vivo Y22 offers storage options of 64 GB and 128 GB, which is considerably more generous compared to other budget phones that typically provide only 32 GB of memory.

With the benefit of larger internal memory, you have the capacity to store more photos, videos, and applications. If that's still not sufficient, the phone also includes a microSD slot which can accommodate up to 1 TB.

Disadvantages of vivo Y22

In addition to the seven advantages above, there are three additional aspects to consider about this latest vivo phone. These three points could be a drawback, depending on your specific requirements and expectations from the device.

1. No Gyro and Compass Sensor

Similar to other entry-level models, this affordable Android phone lacks a gyro and compass sensor, in which these two sensors are quite important in daily use.

The compass sensor, or magnetic sensor, for instance, is useful in determining direction. Without this sensor, the device cannot indicate your facing direction when using a map application.

Meanwhile, the gyroscope sensor has a function to detect movement. Indeed, this sensor is more inclined to be used for playing games such as the PUBG Mobile game. Without this sensor you cannot control the shot by moving the phone.

Luckily, the other standard sensors found in modern phones are all present and function optimally in this model.

2. No Ultra-wide Camera

vivo Y22

When it comes to the camera sector, the Y22 series presents an improvement over the Y21 series, which relied solely on a 13 MP main camera. However, vivo hasn't incorporated an ultra-wide camera in this series.

The vivo Y22 camera set-up includes just a main and a macro camera. This is a bit disappointing as, in the same price range, some manufacturers manage to offer three rear cameras, adding either an ultra-wide or a depth camera.

In my opinion, vivo should consider offering a combination of a main camera and an ultra-wide camera in future models as the ultra-wide camera brings more functions for daily use, such as for shooting with a wider angle of view or many objects.

A limitation of this 50 MP camera lies in its standard camera stabilization system. A stable camera is crucial for capturing quality low-light photos and minimizing the shake effect in high-resolution video recording.

Despite the limitation of having only two rear cameras, the built-in application on the device does offer a commendably comprehensive range of features.

3. Standard Fast Charging

vivo y22

Another potential shortcoming of the vivo Y22 is its fairly standard fast-charging feature, limited to 18W. This is noteworthy, considering that other manufacturers such as Redmi and Infinix are offering a more substantial 33W fast charging in similar price ranges.

Indeed, it seems trivial, but it has a considerable effect in daily use. The reason is, the faster the battery is charged, the faster the phone can be brought back into use for activities.

Conclusion

The vivo Y22, offering 4 GB RAM and 64 GB of storage, is positioned in the entry-level price segment. In an effort to attract consumers, vivo equips this model with competitive specifications.

Noteworthy upgrades are evident in the processor and camera sections. Vivo has opted for the MediaTek G85 chipset, which boasts superior performance compared to the chipset used in previous Y series models. Along with the added Extended RAM feature, this device promises enhanced performance, suitable for gaming or everyday use.

Moreover, vivo installed a large resolution main camera. This change is a special attraction considering that the previous Y series only used a 13 MP camera. This main camera looks even more luxurious with the presence of a night mode feature that is usually present for mid-to-high-end smartphones.

Overall, the vivo Y22 is aimed at a younger demographic seeking a stylish phone with decent performance and camera capabilities, all within a moderate budget. So, what do you think? Does this phone pique your interest?
