How to Disable Sleep Mode on Laptops and PCs

Written by Aris Wibowo

Laptops are highly multipurpose work devices, generally equipped with a sleep mode feature. This mode is designed to save power when the laptop is not in use for a period of time. Not only it helps to save power, but it also contributes to the longevity of laptop components.

Despite the benefits, some users find the sleep mode feature inconvenient. There are times when users prefer their laptops not to go into sleep mode automatically, such as during file downloads or video streaming.

Also, it can be very frustrating when you haven't had time to save your work, only to find that your laptop suddenly goes into sleep mode.

How do you prevent your laptop from going into sleep mode while it's in use? But before we discuss about it, let's first understand what sleep mode is. Check out the following overview.

What is Sleep Mode?

Sleep mode is a power-saving feature where the laptop screen appears off and inactive. This mode saves energy by turning off system functions that are not required. This mode is usually activated when the laptop is not in use for a short period of time.

Sleep mode can be seen as a state where the laptop appears inactive but is not completely shut down. This mode allows the system to quickly reactivate when there is user activity, such as moving the mouse or pressing a key on the keyboard, so that the laptop can operate again.

Many laptop manufacturers include sleep mode as a default feature in their operating systems. Some laptops can even enter sleep mode by simply closing the monitor, and when reopened, the laptop quickly resumes operation.

As mentioned earlier, the main purpose of sleep mode is to save laptop energy. This mode allows users to easily resume their work where they left off without the need to restart the laptop from the start.

When you need to pause your work on your laptop, leaving it on can drain the battery. Sleep mode offers a solution by saving battery power, as it disables the screen and processor while keeping the system in a low-power state.

Turning off your laptop completely when you need to pause your work will result in wasted time. When you return to work, you will have to go through the process of restarting the laptop, which takes extra time.

1. Sleep Mode Setting in Windows 11

If you have a Windows 11 device, you can easily configure sleep mode settings via Control Panel. Follow these steps:

  • Click the 'Search' button (symbolized by a magnifying glass) and type 'Control Panel' in the search box.
  • Select the 'System and Security' menu. In the power section, click on 'Change when computer sleeps'. In the new window, you can choose a sleep mode option based on the idle duration of your laptop. Alternatively, you have the flexibility to set a specific time as per your preference. If you want, you can also disable sleep mode completely. When you are done, select 'Save Changes'.

2. Setting up Sleep Mode in Windows 10

Configuring sleep mode settings varies, depending on the Windows operating system. Here's how you can set sleep mode in Windows 10:

  • Press the 'Windows' key and open the 'Settings' menu.
  • Navigate to the 'System' section and select 'Power & Sleep'.
  • Customize the sleep mode settings by selecting 'Never' for all options. This will effectively disable sleep mode.

Additionally, you can set different sleep mode preferences based on the resources used. For example, you can configure separate settings when the laptop is connected to an adapter versus when the laptop is on battery power. Customize these options to suit your specific needs.

3. How to Enable Sleep Mode in Windows 8

  • Type 'powercfg.cpl' in the search box, and then press 'Enter'.
  • Select the desired power plan and choose the 'Change Plan Settings' option.
  • Look for the 'Put computer to sleep' section and set it to 'Never'.
  • Click the 'Save changes' button to apply the settings. Sleep mode will now be disabled on your Windows 8 laptop.

  • Press the 'Windows' key and type 'Power Options'. Once the options appear, click on it to open the 'Settings'.
  • Look for the 'Change when computer sleeps' option and click on it. Within this menu, you can select the 'Never' option to disable sleep mode on your Windows 7 laptop.

Unlike Windows laptops, adjusting sleep mode settings on a MacBook requires different steps. Here is a straightforward guide:

  • Click on the Apple icon located at the top left corner of the screen.
  • From the drop-down menu, select 'System Preferences'.
  • In the System Preferences window, click on 'Energy Saver'. Within the Energy Saver settings, you'll find two options for configuring sleep mode and screen off: one for when your MacBook is connected to a power source, and another for when your MacBook is on battery power.
  • Adjust the sleep mode duration by sliding the arrow in the 'Display sleep' section. Then select the 'Never' option.

Disabling display sleep mode will cause the MacBook screen to remain on even when not in use, which may increase battery consumption. By following these steps, you can customize the sleep mode settings on your MacBook according to your preferences.

6. How to Set Sleep Mode Using Apps

In addition to the methods described earlier, there are several apps available that can help you prevent your laptop or PC from entering sleep mode automatically. One of the highly recommended apps is Caffeine, which is compatible with Windows 11 and Windows 7, offering a smooth experience.

Once you install Caffeine, you will see a coffee cup icon appearing in the system tray. To enable or disable the app, simply double-click on the icon. If the coffee cup icon appears full, this indicates that the Caffeine app is active, effectively preventing your laptop from automatically going into sleep mode.

Also, within the app settings, you have the option to specify the duration that Caffeine remains active on your system. Please note that for Caffeine to work properly on your laptop, the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Feature Pack is required.

By using the Caffeine application or a similar tool, you can effectively maintain control over the sleep mode settings on your laptop or PC, ensuring uninterrupted use according to your needs.

The following are some methods you can try to prevent your laptop from entering sleep mode. By adjusting the sleep mode settings as mentioned earlier, your laptop should no longer go into sleep mode automatically.

Remember that disabling sleep mode will make your laptop battery drain faster and may increase the risk of damage over time.
